The Batamba Collective, a percussion ensemble made up of UNR students, performs on Sunday, Aug. 20, 2017, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. at The Legislative Plaza, south of the Capitol and north of the Legislative Building. (Note: The location of this event is not firm. Please check back closer to the event for exact location. In case of rain, the rain location is Carson Mall.)
From India to Cuba, Brazil to Africa, the Batamba Collective is a group dedicated to the mixing and honoring of cultures. The group includes Ryan Burt, Brandon Dodge, Anthony Landers, and Adrian Rodriguez. (David Gervais will be subbing for Adrian Rodriguez. Chance Utter will not be able to participate.) According to the group’s Facebook page,
In the beginning, Chance had an itch to start a group similar to the Hands On’semble. After a successful semester at the University of Nevada, Reno (where Chance graduated from and where the four other members are currently studying at) Chance called us all together and we started rehearsing. From there we have looked at Indian classical music (Hindustani or Carnatic, for north or south India), Samba music from Brazil, Ewe music from Ghana, Shona music from Zimbabwe, Rumba and Bata from Cuba as well as bringing in our own influences while studying orchestral music and jazz and the like. We have just begun our endeavors and are looking forward to the bright future ahead of us.
