Echoes is a collectivist jazz ensemble that formed in January 2014 in Oberlin Conservatory’s jazz department. By augmenting its already unorthodox instrumentation with a variety of electronic instruments, the quartet has cultivated a unique and cohesive band sound. Over the course of almost four years of touring and performing, their talents have brought them to venues all across North America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia.
The members of the group are Max Bessesen, Matt DiBiase, Chase Kuesel, and Evan Levine. Matt and Chase performed on the 2017 Jazz & Beyond Festival as members of Frisson.
During the members’ studies at Oberlin Echoes was a mainstay at Northeast Ohio venues like Nighttown, The Bop Stop, and Cleveland’s Tri-C Jazz Festival. More recently Echoes has expanded their domestic presence through two residencies at the renowned Avaloch Farm Music Institute in New Hampshire and subsequent tours of the East Coast and Midwest. These tours included stops at such major venues as Chris’s Jazz Club, The Lilypad, and ShapeShifter Lab.
After extensive performing experience the band decided to document the material on their first self-titled LP. Echoes digitally released this 10-track album in the Summer of 2015.
In January 2016 Echoes was selected by the US Embassy to take part in a music exchange in Amman, Jordan. During a three-week tour of the country Echoes performed and taught at various schools and cultural centers. Upon their return to the United States, Echoes completed a residency at McGill where they worked with students and faculty and performed in some of Montreal’s most renowned jazz venues.
In the summer of 2016, Echoes traveled to the Netherlands to perform in the Swingin’ Gronigen Jazz Festival and conduct a music exchange with conservatories in Gronigen and Amsterdam. This exchange was facilitated and sponsored by Oberlin Conservatory.
In the winter of 2017 Echoes made a trip to South India in conjunction with a grant from the Frank Huntington Beebe Fund for Musicians. During their two week tour the group performed in venues around Tamil Nadu and participated in several educational events.
